FAQ
Your Questions, Our Solutions
NDIS can feel like a maze of terminology, funding categories, and paperwork — especially if you’re new to it, or trying to navigate it from a town where support isn’t exactly around the corner. Whatever’s got you stuck, chances are we’ve helped someone else through it too.
Below are some of the questions we hear most.
Support Coordination is the service that turns an NDIS plan from a document into an actual life. It's the person who helps you understand your funding, connects you with the right providers, and makes sure everything works together — instead of you being left to figure it all out alone.
Why it matters more in regional areas
In a major city, a participant with the wrong provider can usually just call another one. In Giru, Ayr, Home Hill, Bowen, Collinsville, Ingham or Mount Isa, there might only be one option — or none at all. Funding gets approved, but there's nobody nearby to deliver it. Referrals get sent and nothing happens, because most providers can't justify the travel for one or two participants.
That's where Support Coordination becomes essential, not optional. A good coordinator doesn't just send a referral and hope — they build relationships with providers who'll actually show up, explore community-based and telehealth options city services never need to consider, and keep pushing until something works. In regional and remote Queensland, Support Coordination is often the difference between a plan that exists on paper and one that actually changes someone's life.
Not every NDIS plan includes funding for Support Coordination — it's approved when the NDIA decides it's genuinely needed, not automatically given to everyone. You're likely to have it in your plan, or have a strong case for requesting it, if:
- You're new to the NDIS and need help understanding and setting up your plan for the first time
- You don't have family, friends, or another support network who can help you find and manage providers
- Your situation involves added complexity — recent hospitalisation, unstable housing, or a transition from another system such as out-of-home care or a mental health facility
- You're likely to benefit from building the skills and confidence to manage more of your supports independently over time
- You live in a regional or remote area where providers are limited, hard to find, or simply don't service your town — this is one of the strongest reasons to have Support Coordination, since finding what actually works locally takes far more time and persistence than in a major centre
- You've recently become disabled or acquired an injury and are facing hospital discharge — if you're leaving hospital with a new NDIS plan and no supports lined up yet, a Support Coordinator can get things moving quickly so you're not going home to a gap in care
If you're not sure whether Support Coordination is in your current plan, or think you should have it and don't, that's worth raising at your next plan review — and it's something we're happy to talk through with you either way.
Specialist Support Coordination is a higher level of support for participants facing more complex or high-risk situations — not just connecting services, but actively managing risk and reducing barriers in someone's support environment.
It's typically the right fit if you're dealing with:
- A crisis or high-risk situation, such as unstable housing, recent hospitalisation, or involvement with the justice system or child protection
- Multiple, interrelated supports that need to work together — health, housing, mental health, and NDIS services all at once
- Providers who've withdrawn or supports that have broken down, leaving funding in your plan that isn't being used
- A significant transition, such as leaving hospital, moving out of home, or a major change in your condition or needs
Where standard Support Coordination helps you understand and use your plan, Specialist Support Coordination goes further — stepping in during the moments that are genuinely difficult, coordinating multiple services and agencies at once, and working to stabilise your situation so your supports can actually hold.

Getting started is simpler than most people expect — you don't need anything sorted before you reach out.
- Reach out. Give us a call, or fill in our referral form — whichever's easier for you.
- Have an honest conversation. We'll talk through your NDIS plan (or help you understand what to ask for if you're still going through the process), your goals, and what's actually available where you live.
- We start building your supports. From there, we get to work — reviewing your plan, meeting with you and anyone important in your corner, and sourcing providers who'll genuinely show up, wherever you are in North Queensland.
Yes — this is what NQ Support Coordination was built for.
We work with participants and families across Townsville, Giru, Ayr, Home Hill, Bowen, Collinsville, Ingham and Mount Isa, including areas where providers are limited, hard to find, or don't service the town at all. That's not an exception we make — it's the reason this business exists. Our founder, Tara, started NQ Support Coordination after seeing too many people in regional and remote communities left with funding they couldn't use, simply because nothing was available locally.
Where a city-based service might stop at a referral, we go further — building real relationships with providers who'll actually travel, exploring community-based and telehealth options, and staying on it until something genuinely works for your town, not just your postcode.
If you're in a regional or remote area and struggling to find support that fits, that's exactly the conversation worth having with us.
No — you don't need a referral to get in touch with NQ Support Coordination. Anyone with an approved NDIS plan can reach out directly, whether that's you, a family member, or a carer. Self-referral is a normal, straightforward path — you decide who supports you, not the other way around.
That said, referrals are still a common and welcome way people find us — often through a hospital discharge planner, an allied health team, or a Local Area Coordinator during plan implementation. If someone else has suggested us, that's completely fine too; it doesn't change anything about how we work with you.
Either way — reach out by phone, or fill in our referral form, and we'll take it from there.
One practical note worth having on this page: if your Support Coordination is NDIA-managed rather than plan-managed or self-managed, you're limited to registered providers only. Worth checking which category applies to your plan before reaching out, so there are no surprises.
Getting in touch with NQ Support Coordination is easy — reach out however suits you best.
